Boteti district faces high unemployment rate

Boteti District councilors have been implored to prioritise economic empowerment and job creation to improve livelihoods of residents in a bid to reduce adverse poverty through the use of available programmes and policies.

Speaking at the opening of the full council session on Monday, chairperson, Mr Onkhuparetse Monnaatsie said the district was faced with a challenge of high unemployment rate.

He said Local Economic Development (LED) was one of the approaches that could benefit communities by fostering sustainable growth, creating jobs, boosting local income and improving the quality of life for the residents.

The chairperson further highlighted that the district was faced with financial constraints and limited resources to render services optimally.

He also noted that Boteti District was in need of robust Public Private Partnerships, adding that it would go a long way in offering benefits such as improved infrastructure, efficient service delivery and promote cost-effectiveness through private sector expertise and investment as well as economic growth and innovation. 

On another issue, Letlhakane village being the headquarters of the district and one of the fastest growing village, Mr Monnaatsie said was in dire need of a sewage reticulation and storm water drainage system.

“The infrastructure will prevent flooding, improve public health, and enhance environmental quality by managing waste water and storm water effectively.” ENDS
