Starlink serves as new era of connectivity

09 Mar 2025

Botswana has taken a significant leap in its digital transformation with the launch of Starlink through I-Connect, an authorised seller of the satellite-based internet service.

The milestone event, which took place in Gaborone last week, signaled a new chapter in the country’s efforts to enhance connectivity, bridge the digital divide, and unlock economic opportunities.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for State President Mr Moeti Mohwasa emphasised the crucial role of internet access in modern economies, particularly in education, healthcare, and public service delivery.

He acknowledged the longstanding challenges Botswana had faced, including limited infrastructure, high costs, and unstable connectivity particularly in rural areas. With Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency satellite technology, these barriers could soon become a thing of the past.

“This launch is not just about internet access it’s about empowerment,” Mohwasa said.

He also noted that a connected Botswana meant better education for children, improved healthcare services, and new opportunities for businesses to thrive.

According to the Managing Director of Tangerine Connect (T-Connect), Mr Billy Sekgororoane the impact of Starlink was expected to be far-reaching, particularly for businesses and communities in remote areas. Mr Sekgororoane highlighted this as one of the significance of adaptable internet solutions in Africa’s diverse terrain.

“Africa’s landscape presents connectivity challenges, but solutions like Starlink ensure access even in the most remote areas,” he said.

He also said Botswana was ahead in licensing I-Link to expand high-speed internet nationwide.

“By bridging the digital divide, we empower businesses and communities, linking them to global opportunities," he added.

Shedding the light on the introduction of Starlink, Mr Sekgororoane mentioned that it aligned with Botswana’s ambitions to position itself as a digitally advanced nation.

“The satellite service is expected to provide reliable, fast, and affordable internet to underserved areas, enabling entrepreneurs, students, and professionals to connect with the world like never before,” he said. ENDS
