Government is currently drafting regulations that will guide operations of village development committees (VDCs) as well as govern property ratings in major urban villages.

This was by finance and development planning minister, Mr Kenneth Matambo, in his 2014 budget speech to the National Assembly, today, February 3. Mr Matambo said the drafting of these regulations was expected to be completed next month (March).

He said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development was in the process of preparing the Local Economic Development Policy Framework to guide districts in developing their local economies.

“The policy framework is expected to be in place by June 2014. Implementation of the policy framework will commence as a pilot exercise in four districts of; Chobe, Francistown, Kgalagadi and Sowa,” he added.

The pilot exercise, he said, would undertake economic assessment of different localities and develop strategies according to their local economic comparative advantage. ENDS
