SADC Executive Secretary says the SADC Extraordinary Summit was convened to re-evaluate the region's collective response toward restoring peace and security in the region and the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC).
Speaking during the SADC Extraordomary Summit in Harare, Zimbabwe, Mr Elias Magosi said the regional body must do all to ensure that peace was restored in the eastern DRC, adding that the deteriorating situation required serious and immediate interventions.
Mr Magosi said the tension, which had boiled into fierce fight between M23 rebel group and forces deployed through the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo(SAMIDRC) and DRC government had resulted in the death of 16 members from the SADC army contributing countries, other peace keeping mission members and countless civilians.
He said the summit was convened three months following a similar gathering in November 2024 to extend the mandate of SAMIDRC by a year
Meanwhile, SADC chairperson and also president of Zimbabwe, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa said the summit was convened as a matter of urgency to come up with solutions that would address the dire situation in the eastern DRC.
He said the situation was characterised by hostilities and conflicts claiming the lives of innocent people and some peace keeping mission members.
He said the summit had to ensure that the SAMIDRC achieved its primary objective of restoring peace and security on DRC.
He said the SADC region was well known for restoring peace and security, which was made possible through collaborative efforts of member states.
Also, he commended SADC member states for demonstrating the spirit of collective regional solidarity through continued contributions and support to the SAMIDRC. ENDS
