Gaborone Technical College (GTC) is grappling with a severe shortage of essential resources, which is hindering its ability to deliver high-quality education
The institution is facing significant challenges which include inadequate facilities, outdated equipment, and a limited supply of learning materials, all of which impede its capacity to meet the growing demands of its student population.
As a result, the college is calling for urgent intervention to address these critical issues and improve the quality of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) that it provides.
On Wednesday, Assistant Minister for Higher Education, Mr Justin Hunyepa visited GTC to assess the college’s infrastructure and curriculum.
GTC, which has a student population of 602, has been actively engaging relevant stakeholders to help tackle this resource shortage that negatively impact both teaching and learning.
During the meeting, the college’s Principal, Ms Lesego Mokgwathise outlined several challenges facing the institution, including the lack of staff accommodation, shortages of skilled personnel, budget constraints, insufficient opportunities for staff progression, and a general shortage of resources.
She said these issues hampered economic growth and the development of graduates with the necessary skills to drive a skills-based economy.
“We have well-designed programmes aimed at bridging the gaps created by the current curriculum. However, these challenges hinder our ability to provide transformative technical and vocational education and training, which is essential for fostering employment and job creation,” she said.
The President of Student Representative Council, Mr Ashley Kooagile highlighted several issues faced by the student body, including a lack of stationery, school uniforms, and adequate printing machinery.
“Our school is understaffed, particularly in the library, which makes it difficult for students to use the facility, as entry is only permitted under the supervision of a librarian.
Additionally, much of the technical equipment is outdated, hindering students’ efficiency and the smooth facilitation of the curriculum,” he said. ENDS
