Lack of electricity delays Shashe River school reopening

16 Jan 2025

The lack of electricity due to a blown-out transformer at Shashe River School in Tonota for the past four months is the reason the first term of 2025 did not kick start on time as expected.

In an interview, Shashe River School deputy school head, Mr George Showa, said the school considered the safety of pupils, especially boarders, as keeping them in dark hostels was risky.

A decision has thus been taken to send learners back to their homes until the matter is resolved.

Mr Showa said there were many snakes within the school’s proximity, especially in the boy’s hostel, which is situated near a bushy area, posing a threat to learners and making the environment not conducive to learning.

He added that the school used  electricity to cook for pupils, and efforts by the Parents and Teachers Association to procure firewood for cooking have been dealt a hard blow by the current downpours.

Mr Showa said the school could not feed the learners because it did not have an outdoor cooking area.

Mr Showa said arrangements were made for those travelling far to return to their respective villages safely. ENDS
