BNSC launches Hall of Fame
29 Jan 2014
The Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) on January 28 launched the national Sports Hall of Fame logo and also presented Hall of Fame working committee.
Briefing the press at the National Stadium, the BNSC chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng said the Botswana Sports Hall of fame would serve to recognise individuals who contributed immensely to the growth of sports in the country.
He emphasised that they intended to be a wall and not a full structure, and called for everyone’s support “The hall of fame is a national project hence the need to involve everyone” he said.
He appealed to the general public to also take part in the project. Reikeletseng also asked the media to spread the information. He commended the hall of fame working committee for working tirelessly in an effort to select deserving individuals to be inducted.
The committee was appointed by BNSC executive committee with a mandate to kick start the project. The committee led by Raj Rathedi as the chairperson consists of Billy Sekgororoane, Onkemetse Mpudi, Monica Mphusu, Refilwe Segokgo and Peaceful Seleka.
Thus far the committee has been able to indentify and register the hall of fame logo which was officially launched during the course of the event. The logo was designed by Fastnet advertising and it represents outstanding novelty and excellence.
The main elements in the logo include a golden star which symbolises greatness and victory, a waving flag which signifies a proud nation and a sportsperson who represents men and women who have contributed to growth of sports in the country.
Nomination forms for inductees have also been designed and the deadline for nomination is the 14th of February. Selection of individuals who are to be inducted into the hall of fame will be done through an election process by the members of interim committee.
The people eligible for nomination must be retired athletes and sports contributors. The athletes must have distinguished themselves as competitors in or outside the country and should have retired five years before.
However, contributors must be non-athletes who had made an outstanding and extraordinary contribution to sport in Botswana. The individual must have contributed for a continuous period of ten years.
The induction ceremony has been scheduled for the 20th of March where trophies, certificates and blazers will be awarded to the inductees. ENDS
