Cremation to address burial space

15 Jan 2025

The issue of burial space shortages in Kanye is a growing concern, particularly given the village’s increasing population.

With the current graveyards nearing capacity, the proposal for cremation as an alternative to traditional burial has been put forward.

In an interview with BOPA Tuesday, the headman of abitration of Goo-Logaba ward kgosi Gaokgakala Monnathebe noted that this idea was previously suggested by Kgosi Malope II, highlighting the need for solutions to the cemetery space dilemma.

Cremation could indeed alleviate the pressure on graveyards by reducing the need for land dedicated to burials, he said.

Kgosi Monnathebe said the practice not only freed up space, but also potentially lessened the costs associated with maintaining grave sites, which had been highlighted as a financial burden for families and the council.

However, he said the adoption of cremation would require significant cultural acceptance and public education, as it may challenge traditional burial practices deeply rooted in the community.

Moreover, he said the current mismanagement of grave spaces, where some families bypassed the designated authority regarding grave demarcation, exacerbated the issue.

Kgosi Monnathebe said there were formal proposals in place for better land management and oversight of cemetery space to prevent such unauthorised acts.

Getting the local council to oversee grave demarcation and excavation could promote orderliness and prevent future conflicts over topography in these areas, he said.

He added that the deteriorating state of cemeteries, coupled with the need for community involvement in maintenance and upkeep, indicated that a multifaceted approach was needed.

Engaging local religious leaders, as mentioned by umbrella VDC chairperson Ms Gaontebale Lenong, may foster community spirit and responsibility toward the care of these spaces.

Overall, while cremation may offer a viable solution to the shortage of burial space, she said its acceptance would depend on the community’s willingness to adapt and redefine their traditional practices.

Addressing both the need for space and the management of existing cemeteries is crucial in tackling these ongoing challenges she said. ENDS
