In a heartfelt gesture of respect and solidarity, President Advocate Duma Boko yesterday signed the condolences book in honour of former United States (US) President Jimmy Carter, who recently passed away at the age of 100.

The signing, which took place at the US Embassy in Gaborone, was a poignant moment that highlighted the deep admiration for Carter’s global legacy.

In his message, President Boko expressed deepest condolences on behalf of the people of Botswana, recognising Mr Carter’s pivotal role in fostering international relations and promoting peace.

“President Carter was a great leader who served his country and the world with selflessness. His humility and love for humanity stands out as a unique example, one that will continue to be referenced globally as an example of an abiding legacy,” President Boko wrote in the condolences book.

He further noted that Botswana, on behalf of its people, expressed gratitude for Mr Carter’s contributions and was hopeful that the strong relations between the US and Botswana would continue to thrive.

In an interview following the signing of the condolences book, the US Ambassador to Botswana, Mr Howard Van Vranken described the late President Carter as a global humanitarian.

“He was widely celebrated for his lifelong commitment to peace, diplomacy and social justice.

Mr Van Vranken highlighted that during his tenure as the 39th US President, Mr Carter achieved significant milestones such as the Camp Davis Accords, which brokered peace between Egypt and Israel.

He also introduced policies aimed at combating poverty and advancing human rights.

“Jimmy Carter’s lifelong dedication to public service and activism earned him worldwide recognition,” Ambassador Van Vranken stated, adding that he also made notable contributions to healthcare initiatives, environmental protection and poverty alleviation.

The Ambassador emphasised that beyond his diplomatic efforts, Mr Carter’s commitment to human rights was central to his administration’s policies.

He dedicated much of his post-presidential life to improving the quality of life for marginalised and vulnerable populations.

“As we mourn his passing, we recognise that we were graced by a remarkable person. We celebrate his life and enduring legacy,” said Ambassador Van Vranken. ENDS
