Budgetary constraints hinder employment of teachers

22 Dec 2024

The Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Dr Nono Kgafela-Mokoka says said temporary teachers are paid on the last day of the month as it is the nature of the term of their employment.

Answering a question in Parliament recently, Dr Kgafela-Mokoka said the delays of their payment could emanate from shortage of funds and poor network. She however said the ministry would re-visit and re-engineer its processes in an endeavour to facilitate timeous payments.

The minister further said the ministry was not able to absorb qualified temporary teachers into permanent and pensionable posts due to budgetary constraints. She however said they would continue to engage stakeholders to show them the need to create such positions for temporary teachers to be absorbed into permanent positions.

Tlokweng MP Phenyo Segokgo had asked the minister if she was aware that temporary teachers were paid late and how she intended to address the problem. He also asked if the government had plans to absorb all temporary teachers as permanent and pensionable within the education system.
