Spectators rescue First Division North derby
27 Jan 2014
The Greenlovers and Debswana First Division North log leaders, BR Highlanders game nearly aborted as the referees did not turn up for the match in Serowe.
The Saturday January 25 encounter was saved after both teams agreed to use as match referees some people who had come to watch the game. One assistant referee was wearing a casual trouser and was using a green t-shirt as a foul flag while the other one was putting on an overall using a yellow t-shirt as a foul flag.
Prior to the game, one referee had to rush to collect foul cards because they were also not available.
Although the league had long secured a Debswana sponsorship, both teams were donning kits with brands which are not those of th league sponsors. Greenlovers held the log leaders to a goalless draw.
Though both teams failed to hit the back of the net, they had clear chances that they could have used to change the outcome of game.
Greenlover’s Tsobetsi Keiketile squandered goal opportunities. In some instances, Keiketile was only left with beating the goalkeeper.
BR Highlanders was good on aerial balls but was not aggressive during the attack hence it missed golden chances.
The outcome of the game means that the Mahalapye based club is still sitting at the crest of the log with 25 points. Second placed Sankoyo Bush bucks had 20 points before the weekend games.
Prior to the weekend games, Greenlovers were sitting at the sixth spot with 14 points. In an interview, Greenlovers coach, Onthusitse Kootswele said the failure by referees to honour the game was a disappointment.
He said they were informed that the referees commission did not assign the fixtures. On the kit branding issue, Kootswele said they have been waiting for the proper kit since last year during the first season. ENDS
