The historic burial of Mr Pitseng Gaoberekwe at his ancestral land in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve demonstrates the new government’s pursuit in addressing institutional barriers within the judicial system that violates human rights.
President Advocate Duma Boko made the remarks during the International Human Rights Day Commemoration which was held alongside the burial of Mr Gaoberekwe in Metsiamanong yesterday.
The family of Mr Gaoborekwe was denied permission to bury him at his ancestral land leading to a legal battle that ensued for almost three years.
The President, therefore, noted that government was resolute in changing the narrative for the better. Giving background, the President talked about the long-standing tension between government and Basarwa who were against being moved from their ancestral land in CKGR to other areas outside the reserve. He said the forced removal from Old Xade to New Xade was a violation of their rights as they were moved against their will.
The President noted that in addressing deficiencies in the country’s judiciary, the law must be allowed to fashion appropriate relief for any human rights violation. He also urged public service officers to uphold human rights at all times.
He acknowledged Kgosi Lobatse Beslag for sticking to the truth against government’s argument that the deceased’s relocation to New Xade made it an appropriate burial site. Mr Gaoberekwe passed on while seeking healthcare services at New Xade as they were not available at Metsiamanong.
President Boko expressed wish that Mr Gaoberekwe’s grave could be turned into a monument to signify government’s course toward restoration and reshaping of human rights. ENDS
