Children advocate for improved facilities
08 Dec 2024
Children gathered to commemorate the 2024 World Children’s Day in Mochudi on Thursday, urging the upgrading of learning facilities to align with the demands of the digital economy in the 21st century.
During the celebration, young voices expressed the abundant opportunities that the digital economy provided, emphasising the importance of accessing online learning platforms that connected them with peers across the globe. They advocated for all schools to be equipped with Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) to enhance communication skills and foster critical thinking.
The children articulated their fundamental right to an education that values their uniqueness and supported them on their journey to success.
They also appealed to the government to rejuvenate sports activities, debate clubs, and international school exchange programmes, highlighting the need for a holistic educational experience.
Additionally, the children called on parents and teachers to recognise the distinct needs of every learner.
They urged the government to equip schools with educational psychologists to better understand and support students’ diverse learning needs.
Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Ms Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, addressed the attendees, sharing that government was operationalising structures within the Ministry to address children’s issues comprehensively. She emphasised the ministry's mandate to support and protect children from conception until they reach maturity.
"The essence of Children’s Day is to reflect on how we can further domesticate the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, along with the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child," Ms Kgafela-Mokoka stated.
She urged children to hold adults accountable, asking them to engage in discussions about their rights and well-being. Children raised urgent concerns regarding the need for improved infrastructure to facilitate better access to education, the lack of ICT resources in schools, and the necessity for facilities and equipment that support learners with mobility impairments.
This year’s Children's Day was celebrated under the theme: Inclusive and Quality Education for All."
The theme echoes a collective commitment to transforming and revitalising education systems across Africa in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has hindered progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal number four, ensuring quality education for all.
The event served as a clarion call for the ongoing efforts to achieve the Africa Agenda 2063 targets, reinforcing the vital role of education in shaping the future of children across the continent. Ends
