Gaborone United ladies team are this year’s ZAC Construction tournament champions.
GU beat Security Systems 5-1 in the finals, courtesy of Nancy Baeletsi’s hatrick, with Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse and Jessica Modise scoring one each while Bridget Setuke scored the solo goal for Systems. In the first semi-final, GU humiliated Township Rollers 4-1 while Systems beat BDF X1 5-2 to make it to the final.
The champions won P5 000 and a trophy while runners up won P2 500 while Rollers and BDF were given P1 500 each.
GU coach, William Monene said women football was more tactical and scientific, adding that the line-up he used in the final was different from the one he used in the semi-finasl.
That, he said, was necessitated by the fact that they wanted to build a formidable team where all the players would have a chance to play. Monene said their main objective in the tournament was to give all the players a run as it would give them confidence to work hard and compete with the rest of the players. “We need to have a pool of players where we can pick a player and know that she will deliver,” she said.
Systems coach, Omphile Madala said he was happy with his players performance, although they were fatigued.
We did not have enough time to rest after playing our semi-final, as we had only 45 minutes to rest and play GU, a team that has top notch material in women’s football, it was not going to be easy for us,” he said.
The coach said they would rebuild and move forward, adding that he was impressed by his 14 year-old-player Setuke who scored against both GU and BDF , adding that he was confident she would the young player to watch in future. ENDS
