Boxing Fight Night Championship on tonight

Bond Boxing Promotions, a professional boxing stable under Bond Ngubula, will on Friday evening in Gaborone host the third edition of professional boxing bouts dubbed, Boxing Fight Night Championship.

The opening bout of Fight Night Championship will feature the local lad, Thabiso Mpolokeng, who will be taking on Zimbabwe’s Shungu Kupani in the Super International Bantamweight contest.

The duel of the locals between Tshephang Gomotho and Onkarabile Mothibedi will follow in the National Featherweight contest. In another bout, Botswana’s Mmusi Tswiige and South Africa’s Thembani Mhlanga will face each other for the International Middleweight contest.

The International Featherweight contest will be a battle between Botswana’s Kagoetsile Raokgwatlhile against Talent Munda of Zimbabwe.

The duo of local boxers, Keamogetse Ditodi and Aobakwe Mphezulu will contest the National Junior Lightweight.

The event organiser, Ngubula of Bond Boxing Promotions, said all the boxers from outside the country have arrived.

He added that all the local boxers were equally in good health. Ngubula said all the boxers underwent medical check up and weigh-in yesterday.

Ngubula said all the other activities were finalised by yesterday to allow boxers time to rest. He said hosting professional bouts is meant to grow boxing in the country.

Without professional bouts, he noted, boxers would not be able to generate income. Despite having challenges of sponsors, Ngubula applauded companies and other entities who have seen it fit to support professional boxing.

He said what was done in terms of sponsorships was not enough but will not deter their efforts. Ngubula said their wish was for women to develop interest and join boxing.

He said women must develop interest in the sport, therefore start with it from amateur level and ultimately turn professional.

Also, he said it was important to grow boxing at grass roots level and ultimately have reasonable numbers of both women and men turning professional.

He also added that staging professional bouts is a challenge as it entails marketing, which will mean fielding boxers that will entice people to buy tickets and even sponsor the event.

“We appeal to our professional boxers to up their standard and lure more people into the sport,” he said. Ends
