The long awaited FNB Premiership, which was scheduled to start this weekend, has been postponed to September 27.
Botswana Football League (BFL) Chief Executive Officer, Bennett Mamelodi, said in an interview that upon his election as Botswana Football Association (BFA) president, Tariq Babitseng and his National Executive Committee directed the BFL to postpone the season by a week.
This, he said was done to allow for re-alignment and re-set of the new committee’s vision and forecast of football in the country.
Following the postponement, Mamelodi said they had a stakeholder engagement with among others, the league’s title sponsor, First National Bank Botswana.
“Therefore, on September 27, we will have a Gaborone Derby, followed by week two on the weekend of October 5, then FIFA week and everything else will flow from that,” he said.
He further said notices were also issued for expression of interest for two independent individuals; the league independent chairperson and independent director.
The posts should be filled by individuals who had not been employees of BFL, BFA or any member of BFA and should not be active in the management of any club in Botswana.
Mamelodi also said vacancies of the BFL board would be completed next week during the BFL elective assembly.
He said he was hopeful that everything would be on track once the board was in place.
He said preparations for the new season were at an advanced stage adding that the season would be bigger and better adding that they looked forward to unleashing a new season and encouraged Batswana to come the stadia in large numbers. Ends
