The emergence of Sethunya Majama has given the country a ray of hope, that someone is capable of filling the legendary Amantle Montsho’s big shoes in 400m.
As Majama takes to the track today at the World Athletics Junior Championships held in Peru, Lima, Batswana will be waiting with bated breath for her to proceed to the next rounds.
Strong and hardworking adjectives fully describe Majama. If she does not panic and keeps her composer, surely the nation should expect something from her.
National team coach, Nico Manyepedza said the athlete was ready to face the world.
“She is a bit nervous. I think it is because she is the first woman to qualify for the World Junior Championships, but we have been trying to talk to her and boost her confidence,” he said.
He said her training session on Monday demonstrated that she was fully prepared looking at the times she was running.
“If she can keep her cool and without anxiety, I am hoping to see her at the finals, and she will be competing with most athletes who were competing in 100m. Maybe that can work for her,” he added.
Meanwhile, the U20 mixed relay failed to make it to the finals as they finished in position seven with a Season Best time of 3:32.75 The quartet was made up of Justice Oratile, Warona Thonisani, Keorapetse Oreokame and Ame Bogoma.
The coach said as Botswana, they still have a long way to go in the mixed relay, particularly regarding all the ‘legs’ that were run by the girls.
“We don’t have a problem with the boys, and this issue needs to be addressed because we have potential in the mixed relay.
So if the girls cannot compliment their boys well, then we are going to have a serious problem,” he said. Ends
