22 Aug 2024
The highly anticipated Xere Cultural Festival is expected to attract multitudes as the Basarwa community prepares to showcase their unique culture. The event will kick off on Friday with a sundowner, featuring guest speaker His Excellency President Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi.
Trust Chairperson Mr Batshwanetse Keabuile said that the Xere troupe was ready to treat attendees to the sweet melodious music and exceptional dancing skills that embody San culture.
The sundowner will offer an array of activities, including sunset photography, stargazing, song and dance around the fire, and poetry readings.
Saturday's festivities will commence with an exhilarating game drive through the Makgadikgadi National Park and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. This will be followed by a cultural village tour, where the Basarwa will provide a glimpse into their way of life through five mogwaafatshe houses. "These houses will feature a nursing mother and child, a caretaker's dwelling, a traditional doctor's residence, a storage house for medicinal plants, and a wild food storage area, alongside live demonstrations of animal meat preparation, said Keabuile.
The event will continue with vibrant displays of Basarwa cultural songs and dances, culminating in an urban festival that will last throughout the night. According to the Coordinator of BlackSmith, the event organiser, revellers can expect to be mesmerized by an expanded demonstration of Basarwa culture. The lineup of artists includes Dee Jay KSB, Chukuma, Franco, Natureboy, and many others. ENDS
