Choppies dangles P1 Million carrot to athletes

Choppies Botswana has dangled a P1 million carrot to any Team Botswana athlete that will win a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which starts today.

Speaking at the incentives launch in Gaborone yesterday,  Choppies Botswana’s public relations officer Kebonyemodisa Kebonyemodisa said an athlete winning gold will also get P2 500 worth of grocery for a year.

Any silver medallist, he said would be rewarded with P500 000 and bronze with P250 000, while those who make it to the finals would get P25 000. 

The relay team, he said would share the prize money.

“If they were to win gold, six athletes will share the P1 million prize money,” he said.

Choppies Botswana chief executive officer, Ramachandran Ottapathu said in the last two Olympics, winners benefited from their company.

He said the incentives were a gesture of showing support to the sport fraternity in the country.  Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC), chief executive officer, Dorothy Tlagae-Gaseitsiwe said the incentives were an encouragement to drive athletes to work hard toward attaining greatness.

“It truly demonstrates that their efforts are valued and that yourselves, as Choppies Botswana, and as Batswana across the country are proud of them, and wish them well,” she said

She said BNOC appreciated Choppies’ continued support adding that their partnership with Botswana sport was commendable. 

“We await further collaborations, which will broaden our partnership past this point, and feed into our broader objectives of stimulating private sector participation in sport,” she said. ENDS
