Okavango Diamond Company bankrolls Davis Cup

Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) has sponsored Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) with P250 000 for use during the Tennis World Cup (Davis Cup) Africa Group V event.
The tournament, which starts in Gaborone today until Saturday features 15 countries being; Botswana, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mozambique, Congo, Gabon, Seychelles, Mauritania, Lesotho, Djibouti, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan and Libya.The countries will be competing for two spots for promotion to Africa Group IV.
Speaking during the sponsorship launch on Friday, ODC chief financial officer Lipalesa Makepe said the hosting of the Davis Cup would not only strengthen Team Botswana competitive edge but also aligned with their strategy in boosting tourism and creating jobs.
She said they believed in fostering sport to diversify and grow the economy.
BTA president, Oaitse Thipe said Davis Cup was one of the oldest competition in sports and one of the biggest annual competition.
He said Davis Cup was first hosted as back as 1900, adding that the last time Botswana hosted it was in 2006.
“It has been a while since we hosted this event, so it is very important and the tournament is going to bring a lot of value to the country, our airline and hotels is going to get value from this competition,” he said. Ends
