Small stock profitable - official

Many households in Botswana derive their livelihood from small stock rearing which also play a significant role in creation of wealth in rural areas.

Speaking during Remmogo Small Stock Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Serowe on Saturday, Serowe District agricultural coordinator, Mr Kenneth Mabote said small stock was among the most profitable for small farms because it was easy to raise. He wished young people could embrace agriculture so that they could self-employed and contribute to national food sufficiency Mr Mabote said goat meat was one of the most widely eaten meats in the world and advised farmers to take farming as a business.  He said rearing goats was cheap and easy adding that goat meat was needed in hospitals and other institutions while its milk was also good and nutritious.

A farmer, Ms Othusitse Oneilwe indicated that capacity building was needed for farmers.

Ms Oneilwe said she was concerned about the impact of drought on small stock as well as crime. Another farmer, Mr Moreri Letlhare said land was a stumbling block for those interested in small stock farming and appealed to the association to make their voices be heard. ENDS
