Youth critical to development
05 Jan 2014
The youth of Magoriapitse in the Ngwaketse area have been urged to contribute towards development of their village.
Speaking in a consultative meeting recently the Village Development Committee (VDC) chairperson, Mr Geoffrey Khoane said the village lagged behind in terms of developments because the youth who were supposed to pioneer developments migrated to towns and some of them never came back to give back to the community that had raised them to what they had become.
Instead of migrating to towns looking for employment opportunities, Mr Khoane, who is also the chairperson of the Ngwaketse South Youth Agricultural Association urged the youth to take advantage of the available youth specific programmes, schemes and initiatives to create employment and improve the quality of their lives in Magoriapitse.
Meanwhile, he said they were also looking to turn the local pan into a camp site in order to generate income for village development activities and projects. He said the campsite would have accommodation units that would enable the VDC to benefit from travellers who used the highway that passed through the village en route to South Africa.
One of the village elders, Mr Charles Modimothebe decried that most of the youth never attended kgotla meetings thus missing out on some citizen empowerment opportunities as a result of ignorance and advised them to desist from the habit.
Mr Modimothebe advised the youth to seek information on the available government assistance programmes so that they could also benefit. He further urged Magoriapitse youth to contribute whatever little they could towards charity to help restore the dignity of the less privileged residents.
Furthermore, Mr Modimothebe cautioned the youth to get involved in the local school activities like prize giving ceremony in order to motivate learners to aim high in their studies. The meeting ended with the election of an interim committee chaired by Mr Tshepo Ookame and Mr Ogaufi Bajammewa as the vice chairperson.
Ms Lone Modimothebe was elected the Secretary and Bongani Simon her assistant while Baitshepi Motlhageng became the treasurer and Ms Kesego Seboko ascended the PRO seat. The youth also changed the village Facebook page from mago4sheezy to Magoriapitse for easy access. ENDS
