Women cricket team eyes T20 tournament

Botswana women cricket national team kick started its participation in the prestigious annual Kwibuka Women’s T20 International Tournament with a game with Uganda in Kigali, Rwanda yesterday.
Today, the team will face Cameroon followed by a fixture against Rwanda tomorrow.
The eight-nation tournament, which also features Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya and Rwanda, started yesterday until June 8.
As an International Cricket Council (ICC) associated event, the tournament result will contribute to the ICC Women’s T20 rankings.
Botswana Cricket Association vice chairperson, Sumod Damodar said preparations for the tournament went well adding that the team’s aim was to be in the final.
Team Botswana, which is led by Stanley Timoni as head coach and Cecilia Sebako as team manager, is made up of Tuelo Shadrack (captain), Pako Mapotsane (vice-captain), Laura Mophakedi, Shameelah Mosweu, Goabilwe Matome, Oratile Kgeresi, Merapelo Phiase, Amantle Mokgotlhe, Onneile Keitsemang, Kesego Inakale, Wendy Moutswi, Amantle Letuba, Aliya Motorwala and Entle Mmese.
Meanwhile, Botswana Bowling Association (BBA) has unveiled players to represent the country at the African States Tournament.
Hosted by Botswana at the Orapa Bowling Club, the tournament will be held from September 23 to 26.
In the 2023 tournament, which was in Namibia, Team Botswana secured five medals, a gold in women’s triples, two silver medals in the men’s singles and triples and two bronze medals in the men’s pairs and fours.
The BBA, in a press release expressed hope that the tournament will be a morale boost on the team is hoping to perform better than it did at the previous event.
The women’s team is made up of Tshenolo Moshokgo, Lesego Motladiile, Boikhutso Mooketsi, Marea Modutlwa, Mpopi Pelemo and Chinky Sinomb while the men’s team comprises Baven Balendra, Modisaotsile Mphotho, Kaizer Geche, Charles Diteko, Edwin Nyoka and Kabo Gaboutloeloe.
In netball, the 2023 Lucara Botswana Netball league finals that were scheduled to take place in Orapa from May 30 to June 2 have been postponed to July 4-8.
According to the Botswana Netball Association, the postponement was necessitated to finalise some logistical issues with the sponsor, Lucara Botswana. Ends
