Letsile wins big at Region 5 Sports awards

Botswana flag was once again hoisted high as the country’s sprint sensation, Letsile Tebogo won two prestigious awards at the sixth edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Annual Sports Awards, held in Zambia on Saturday.

Tebogo who was recognised in absentia because his mother’s burial was held on the same day of the event won sportsperson of the year, beating Rady Gramane of Mozambique and swimmer Luca Fraser of eSwatini.

He also clinched the junior male sport person of the year, beating Zambian, William Chinzewa of Draughts and Malawian Luke Chimwene of swimming.

Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) vice president, Oabona Theetso said they were happy that Tebogo continued to put Botswana on the map.

“The two awards came a week after Letsile won the sportsman of the year and the sport person of the year at the Botswana Sport Awards ceremony last Saturday,” he said.

That alone, he said was a clear indication that Tebogo was a hard worker not only recognised in his country but also in the region.

He said the win also demonstrated growth on his part and the BAA adding that they were confident that greater things were coming his way.

Swimmer Haley Hoy of eSwatini won the junior female sportsperson of the year, beating Botswana’s Obakeng Kamberuka and footballer Victoria Mkwala of Malawi.

For the sportsman of the year, South African rugby player, Siya Kolisi beat Botswana’s Bayapo Ndori and Mancoba Nhlabatsi of eSwatini.

Sportsman of the year with disability went to Ananias Shikongo of Namibia beating Theo Nkele of Botswana and South Africa’s Mpumelelo Mhlongo.

Senior men 4x400 men’s relay this time missed the team of the year award that was won by South Africa’s men’s rugby national team.

In other categories, Botswana won country of the year award while Dorcas Makgato and Kitso Kemoeng received silver jubilee awards in recognition of their contribution in the development of sport in the country. Ends
