Use public transport

19 Dec 2013

In an effort to ensure safety on roads during the festive season, the Botswana Police Service, Roads Transport and Safety department (DTRS) and Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA) have joined hands in encouraging the people to use public service vehicles.

In an interview, DTRS public relations officer, Ms Mmapula Samson said police would monitor the bus stops around Gaborone to prevent pirating and ensure that only public service vehicles are used. She said unlicensed vehicle drivers found pirating would be prosecuted adding that the Department has made an effort to increase public transport vehicles to address the high demand and reduce long queues.

Ms Samson said they have issued a press release inviting drivers to apply for special permits to carry passengers to prevent people from using non-permitted vehicles. The duration for receiving applications was December 10 to 17.  She further stated that they had released a press release which invited drivers to apply for a special permit to carry passengers during the upcoming holiday season only.

The duration for receiving applications was between the 10th and 17th of December. DTRS, she said, would also work with Botswana Bus Operators Association (BOBOA) to ensure safety on public transport by preventing overloading of passengers.

Drivers are also advised not to over speed or drink and drive, adding that mounted road blocks would also help regulate over speeding motorists and inform road users about road safety.

Farmers, she said, are also advised to take care of their animals and remove them from the roads while pedestrians are reminded to be cautious on the roads. ENDS
