Sir Seretse Khama commemoration marathon continues to gain momentum across the country and an activation event was held in Maun on April 6.
The activations across the country are intended to mobilise athletes to register for the inaugural marathon, which honours Botswana’s founding president, Sir Seretse Khama.
Speaking at the activation ceremony in Maun, Halfway Toyota Botswana CEO, Riaan Grobler said it was imperative that Batswana safeguarded and honour the statesman through events such as the marathon.
He described the first president as a true statesman, nation builder and a constitutionalist who promoted national unity and ensured all Batswana were equal.
“The founding President of Botswana was a true patriot who was always ready to serve his people.”
For his part, GaMmangwato regent, Kgosi Serogola Seretse said the marathon was intended to celebrate the legacy of the first President and unite Batswana as part of the buildup celebrations for the founding father of the nation’s birthday on July 1.
He highlighted that the marathon also served as an opportunity to promote the economic and cultural outlook of Serowe while offering participants a platform for cultural exchange.
He thanked other traditional leaders for taking the lead in promoting the marathon, saying their efforts had encouraged Batswana to be united and to support the race.
Kgosi Oatleng Setlhodi of Chanoga said it was fitting that Ngamiland was one of the districts to host the activation because it shared a boundary with GaMmangwato, which has solidified by mutual respect.
He said the former leader contributed immensely to the country’s democracy and peace as well as laying the foundation for the value of Botho. He added that Sir Seretse Khama loved his people and that he remained dear in the hearts of Batswana.
He said the marathon, billed for June 29-30 in Serowe, deserved all the hype and enthusiasm from Batswana until the final day on the eve of Sir Seretse Khama’s birthday. ENDS
