Lefika relays set for Saturday

Lefika Athletics Club will host the second edition of Lefika International Continental tour at the National Stadium on Saturday. 

The relays will be used as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympics and the World Relays that will be held in The Bahamas. 

About 300 athletes, local and international, are expected to compete in different events being relays, hurdles and steeple chase. 

Lefika chairperson, Thari Mooketsi said they were  to host the memorable event. 

He said despite lack of event sponsorship, they were confident that the event would produce a qualifier. 

So far, Mooketsi said only Namibia had confirmed its participation. 

He, however, said they were expecting more countries’confirmation by Friday. 

“For the event to be recognised, we need two countries to compete, so there is Botswana and Namibia, but we need more countries to confirm so that the competition becomes very competitive,” he said. 

The events include amongst others 4x100m men and women, 4x200m men and women 4x400m men and women, 4x800m men and women and mixed relays. 

The promotional events are 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 3000m steeplechase and visually impaired events. 

Botswana will be represent by Phocis Raphe, Tutu Massa, Tumo van Wyk, and Calvin Omphile, Letsile Tebogo, Stensol Sibanda in the 4x100m men’s relays. 

In the 4x100m women, Botswana will be represented by Nancy Budzani, Tsaone Sebele, Refilwe Murangi, Lone Madzimule and Winnie Sarefo. The 4x400m men is made up Zibani Ngozi, Ernest Kumevu, Anthony Pesela, Omphile Seribe, Kabo Rankgwe and Isaac Makwala. 

The 4x400m women team comprises of Christine Botlogetswe, Tlhompang Basele Motlatsi Rante, Batisani Kennekae, Golekanye Chikanyi, and Jack Rita. The mixed relay 4x400m has Keitumetse Maitseo, Clifton Meshack, Kago Seshoka, Batisani Kennekae and Chikani. ENDs
