Grand Prix saga rages on
01 Apr 2024
Botswana Golden Grand Prix will not be held on April 14 as scheduled.
Golden Door Sports Agency director, Glody Dube, who was given rights to hold the grand prix, has had his contract with World Athletics terminated and he took the matter to court for redress and on Wednesday, the High Court interdicted preparations for the event which was to be held in Gaborone on April 14.
Gaborone High Court, Justice Tshepo Motswagole issued a rule nisi returnable on April 5.
According to Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) vice president, Oabona Theetso due to the case before the Gaborone High Court, it would not be possible for stakeholders to prepare for the event on time as court had ordered BAA to stop all the event preparations.
He said ticket sales and other advertising material were halted.
“In a nutshell, the event will not take place as it was scheduled for April 14 at the National Stadium,” he said.
He said having been given the rights by the World Athletics, BAA had wanted to deliver a spectacular event.
Also, Theetso said they were aware that World Athletics had removed Botswana Golden Grand Prix event from its calendar of events.
“Remember, we are not sure whether the case will finish on April 5, but we are hoping that after the case is done, World Athletics will reinstate the event, but as of now there will be no event on April 14,” he said. Ends
