Lucara Netball League concludes first round
29 Feb 2024
Lucara Netball League will conclude its first round matches over the weekend. The league is divided into southern and northern regions.
The games will be held at Tshwaragano Junior Secondary School in Maun. However, the Southern region already completed its first round matches on February 10, 2024.
Tshenolo Gareitsane, the public relations officer for the northern region league committee, mentioned that despite the league starting on January 13, 2024, the northern region faced unforeseen challenges. Teams were dispersed across the region, leading to high travel costs and difficulties in fulfilling fixtures. This situation resulted in a team from Letlhakane in Boteti being unable to play all their initial fixtures, granting their opponents soft points.
The northern region consists of two teams in Palapye, two in Francistown, two in Letlhakane, one in Selebi Phikwe, and one based in Maun. Gareitsane highlighted that long-distance travel and logistical issues took a toll on the teams. In an attempt to tackle this, the region now schedules games once a month to allow teams time to recuperate and prepare. The league also faced challenges with playing grounds, as they heavily relied on school facilities that came at a cost.
Regent Pitso, the public relations officer for the Southern Region League Committee, mentioned that the South has 13 teams, eight for women and five for men. The first round matches for the Southern Region spanned from January 20 to February 10, 2024. Despite challenging weather conditions like high temperatures and rainfall, all first-round fixtures were completed by the teams, even if they had to play in open courts.
The second and final leg of the season will recommence on April 6. Lucara Botswana sponsors the league with P300,000. BOPA
