18 Feb 2024

Leader of House, Mr Slumber Tsogwane has emphasised the role of education in rural development.

Debating the 2024/2025 budget proposal, Mr Tsogwane highlighted the pivotal role education played in fostering development, particularly in rural areas, where access to quality education was limited.

“Education is paramount when it comes to rural development as it has the potential to drive socio-economic progress and uplift communities,” he said.

He noted that research had shown that a farmer with primary education performed better in his role compared to one without.

He emphasised the significance of research, especially for those intending to participate in the Temo Letlotlo programme.

Mr Tsogwane, who is also MP for Boteti West, said it was therefore important for government, funds permitting, to allocate more resources to the sector in order to ensure equitable access and improved educational outcomes.

Regarding development projects, he said government had numerous projects in the pipeline.

“Out of 145 projects, 62 are scheduled to commence between February and March in accordance with the Transitional National Development Plan,” he said.

He said for quality assurance and timely completion of projects, government planned to introduce a new mechanism by appointing development managers.

“These professionals will be entrusted with the responsibility of closely monitoring projects, guaranteeing adherence to schedules and standards,” he said.

He emphasised that the initiatives were not merely motivated by the approaching elections, but stemmed from government’s commitment to navigate the complexities of development with precision and effectiveness.

“I also welcome the water project due to be constructed in Boteti West,” he said.

Mr Tsogwane also highlighted the urgent need for maintenance, citing schools such as Rakops and Mopipi junior secondary schools as those required renovation. ends
