Plastic levy not implemented

12 Dec 2013

The Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism Mr Tshekedi Khama has told parliament that the plastic levy which was conceptualised sometimes back has not been implemented and hence no collection of money has been made as levy.

Mr Khama said the money currently paid for plastic carrier bags is determined by the seller and is currently held by the shops and not paid to the levy.

The Minister highlighted that since there has not been a levy in place, no money was collected by the government.

MP for South East South, Mr Odirile Motlhale had asked the minister whether the way the plastic levy is currently being implemented is in line with the original objective. He further asked him to state the amount of money collected by government from retailers annually since the inception of the levy and what this money is being used for. ENDS
