12 Feb 2024

Gaborone United women’s team continued with their winning streak whitewashing Prisons 9-0 in a division 1 clash played at Lekidi on February 10.

The new signees, Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse and Laone Moloi netted the hatrick, while Atang Busang, Lone Gaofetoge and Keitumetse Dithebe scored a goal each.

Prisons coach, Quelch Moroke attributed their major loss to the fact that they were rebuilding the team and had introduced young players.

He said they did not start well because the defence had a problem and Tshoganetso Keitirile and Thabang Gaonnewe’s injuries was a heavy blow to his side.

“To be honest, GU outclassed us, they were better tactically. Though we are in a building process, we are not bad,” he said.

The winning coach Steven Maposa said he was happy with his team’s performance.

“Generally we had a good game and the girls are executing what we have been working on at training, and credit to them for their commitment, even when there were leading with a huge margin they never stopped searching for more goals,” he said.

Furthermore, Maposa said their important assignment on the day was to consistently possess the ball.

He said their intention was to challenge for the honours and any cup that might come their way.

He however decried that nine of his players were called for the national team, adding that although he was happy that it would help with their fitness, but it might also kill the rhythm and momentum of their team

“I will be remaining with few players and The Mares play is different from ours. It is a good thing for our players to be called for national duty and bad for us as well as we will be forced to fine tune them to adjust to our style of play on their return,” he said. ENDS.
