The MP for Mmadinare, Mr Molebatsi Molebatsi, has donated 1000 broiler chickens to the community of Jekela ward in Mmadinare .
Handing over the chickens at Mmadinare on Tuesday, Mr Molebatsi said it was his desire to make sure that all the chicken produced in the district were absorbed in all government institutions through the Economic Diversification Drive (EDD).
He said poultry production was one area where most farmers were excelling and therefore encouraged benficiaries to go and take good care of the chickens and create wealth for themselves.
Mr Molebatsi, also an assistant minster of agriculture, said the broiler chickens given to the recipients were a kick start to lay the foundation to further increase capacity and rear more birds after this batch in preparation for the opening of Mmasebotse Abattoir in four months to come.
“Hopefully by this time you will have built enough capacity to compete with other farmers and able to send chickens for slaughter at the abattoir,” he said.
Mr Molebatsi commended his ministry for imparting skills to the farmers, adding that the recipients had already been provided with broiler management skills.
He assured them that if they used their skills properly then they would realize some gain from the projects, emphasing that the staff from the department would keep monitoring and assisting them with any challenges that they may encounter.
Mr Molebatsi explained that the construction of Mmasebotse Abattoir in Sefhophe would be completed in 4 months meaning that there would be a high demand for chickens to be slaughtered at the facility.
Slaughtering of chickens at the abattoir, he said created market access for farmers at various avenues such as hotels, fast foods restaurants and retailers.
He also encouraged the recipients to pay much attention to the value chain development and value addition opportunities that went with the establishment of the poultry abattoir such as feeds suppliers, green production, transportation for feeds and transportation of frozen chicken meat to the markets.
“With the chickens slaughtered at the abattoir you can also value add by processing the whole chicken meat into specialized cuts (wing), breast chicken stripes, hamburger chicken meat and chicken nuggets,” said Mr Molebatsi
For her part one of the beneficiaries Ms Gladys Senne, thanked the MP for the donation. She promised to take care of the chickens and work closely with Ministry of Agriculture.
She said the chickens would alleviate them from poverty and create jobs for the Mmadinare community. ENDs
