Mascom partner to pay Ipelegeng workers

07 Feb 2024

Mascom has partnered with Chobe District Council on a one year contract to disburse salaries for 966 Ipelegeng workers in the district through MyZaka Mascom Money.

Speaking at an engagement session between the two parties in Kasane on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Chobe District Council, Mr Chimney Mululwani, said the partnership commenced in December 2023 when the first cohort of Ipelegeng workers were paid through the payment platform.

He said the partnership followed a decision by Bank of Botswana to discontinue the use of cheques which prompted the council to publish a tender for mobile money service providers to express an interest.

Mr Mululwani said the new payment system was in line with Botswana’s Reset Agenda key priority on digitalisation which the council had embraced.

He said mobile money payments would improve service delivery and ensure workers from received their money on time without having to queue to be paid.

The new initiative had empowered Batswana registered as MyZaka money agents owning tuck-shops and general dealers in villages across the district.

Mr Mululwani said people would be able to save their money on the accounts unlike in the past when they cashed out all the money from cheques.

Mascom CEO, Ms Dzene Makhwade-Seboni, said this partnership intended to make life easier for Batswana enrolled in Ipelegeng by offering them mobile money services.

She said the partnership also  reinforced Mascom’s commitment to power connections that inspired change and cultivated growth as the world shifted to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

She indicated that the new deal had paved way for more opportunities as there were many avenues that the two parties could explore together in future. Ends
