The annual Mogoditshane football tournament, popularly known as the Matlolapata games, have been described as a huge success this year.
In an interview, former national team player, Aaron Radira, said the games were a huge success with high participation of both teams and spectators.
Radira said the annual games take place every second of January.
He explained that the tournament featured teams from Mogoditshane east and west competing against each other, noting that the A12 road that runs through the village was the distinguishing feature.
He spoke about the historical rivalry between Mogoditshane east and west teams, explaining that the feud dated back many years and was reflected in the matches between teams from the two sides of the village.
Radira noted that teams such as Mogodishane Young Fighters represented the west while others such as Maungo were formed by east residents.
He, however, said tensions and rivalry between the two sides had significantly subsided over the years with the introduction of the Matlolapata games.
He added that the initiative was intended to foster unity and peace between the two sides through friendly football matches. He also noted that the matches included for
Under15, Under17 and masters where former elite players and current household names rubbed shoulders.
He noted that current players residing in Mogoditshane, including premier leagues players, were also invited to participate in the main game of the day.
Radira also said professional referees officiated at the games to ensure they were conducted fairly and according to standards.
He said this year’s games were more competitive with a large number of participating teams and a range of talent on display. He also said the organisation and logistics were improved, making for a smooth and more enjoyable experience for both teams and spectators.
Radira also said they positioned all vendors strategically to ensure they were properly spaced and separated from spectators, adding that they increased the number of marshals to enhance security.
Radira stressed the importance of preparation, noting the Jwaneng disaster where several vehicles were gutted by fire. He said they separated cooking businesses from vehicles to ensure proper spacing at Solomon Dihutso Primary School where the games took place.
He said the objective of the games was to promote the development of Mogoditshane through sport and emphasised the unifying impact of the games on Sgadishu as Mogoditshane is affectionately referred to by its residents.
He noted that there was already a registered Matlolapata Trust that was established to work for the village and its residents. He said it would collaborate with other entities in various community projects such as renovating kgotlas and helping the less priviledged.
One important lesson learnt from this year’s event was the importance of teamwork and communication.
He said all victorious teams demonstrated exceptional coordination, unity, fair play and sportsmanship, adding that all teams showed respect and integrity.
He said residents must expect an even bigger and more electrifying tournament next year. Ends
