The assistant minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ms Botlogile Tshireletso says she is aware that both Therisanyo and Bontleng Primary schools in Gaborone have no teacher’s houses.

Answering a question from MP for Gaborone South, Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi, the Minister said Therisanyo Primary school has 26 teachers who are accommodated in various places with five teachers accommodated in houses at Block 8, four in another schools and 14 in privately rented accommodation.

She said the remaining three are temporary teachers who are not provided with accommodation adding that out of the 16 teachers from Bontleng primary school, three teachers are accommodated in flats at Block 8, three other schools and six in privately rented accommodation with the remaining four being temporary teachers who are not provided with accommodation.

She said her ministry is undertaking backlog eradication programme to construct critical school facilities such as teacher’s quarters, toilets and classrooms across all districts countrywide and it is expected that Gaborone City Council will benefit from this programme with 37 teachers quarters built in Taung and Galaletsang primary school
Ms Tshireletso however, stated that it must be noted that in order to resolve the shortage of staff accommodation in Gaborone, the procedure at Gaborone City Council has been that housing is shared amongst all the schools on a first come firs serve basis to try to resolve the critical accommodation problem.

She said it is anticipated that projects for the construction of houses under this programme will be mobilised in March next year.
MP Molatlhegi had asked whether she is aware that Bontleng and Therisanyo primary schools in Gaborone south constituency have no institutional houses, and if so, what plans are in place to address the teacher’s accommodation problem and to state the timeline for such interventions. ENDS
