The Ministry of Transport and Public Works appreciates that the Tutume-Kalakamati road is an important link between Tutume District and North East District as it provides a shorter alternative to the current link through Sebina by almost 30 kilometres.
Answering a question on behalf of the transport minister, assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Aubrey Lesaso said other important links associated with the Nswazwi-Kalakamati road which is 10 kilometres and needed upgrading included the Kalakamati-Zwenshambe gravel road, which is 27 kilometres.
“This is the important section of the ‘loop road’ from Sebina to Ramokgwebana, which is the core route for North East District,” he said.
He explained that the 45 kilometres of road linking Tutume and Kalakamati, as well as the 35 kilometres section of road between Tutume and Nswazwi was already of acceptable bitumen standard whereas the remaining 10 kilometres between Nswazwi and Kalakamati was of gravel standard.
As such, he said currently the ministry had no plans to upgrade the 10-kilometre gravelled section to bituminous standard due to budgetary constraints.
Nkange MP, Dr Never Tshabang had asked the minister about plans to upgrade the road linking Tutume and North East District via Nswazwi-Kalakamati road. ENDS
