Some village infrastructure to be upgraded during TNDP

14 Dec 2023

The village infrastructure in Tsabong, Ghanzi, Letlhakeng, Palapye, Ramotswa, Tlokweng, Moshupa, Bobonong, Mmadinare, Mahalapye, Kasane and some other villages countrywide require upgrading.

However, due to budgetary constraints, not all the above-mentioned village infrastructure has been covered under the ongoing Transitional National Development Plan (TNDP), the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Talita Monnakgotla has said.

From the list, Ms Monnakgotla said the villages that were covered under TNDP (2023-2025) for infrastructural upgrading were Palapye, Ramotswa and Mmadinare for internal roads as well as the design and construction of stormwater drainage in Mahalapye. She said the design and construction of internal roads would cover a total length of 25km at each of the respective villages.

“The design and construction of the stormwater drainage system is expected to address existing flooding in the villages where they are being constructed,” she said.

She said more than P141 million was provided for the construction of internal roads at Palapye and Ramotswa each while Mmadinare internal roads would cost P80 million. The design and construction of Mahalapye stormwater drainage system was budgeted at P120 million.

“The population of these villages as per the Housing and Population Census of 2012 ranges between 13 000 and 52 000,” she said.

Ms Monnakgotla said the past upgrading of village infrastructure development was undertaken at Gumare, Bobonong, Tsabong (Phase 1), Kang, Gabane, Tutume and Letlhakeng.

Therefore, she said NDP12 would benefit additional villages.

Ms Monnakgotla said the allocation of projects to the Development Managers (DM) comprised of varied projects such as internal roads, schools, clinics and police stations among others.

She said Pro-serve was assigned to Ramotswa internal roads, K-Hill Consortium was assigned to Mahalapye and Palapye projects, while Hatch Associates was responsible for Mmadinare internal roads.

Currently, Ms Monnakgotla said the DM were still in the feasibility and conceptual design phase, which upon completion local contractors would be engaged for the construction phase.

Ms Monnakgotla was responding to a question from Member of Parliament for Kgalagadi South, Mr Sam Brooks who had asked the minister to apprise the house on major infrastructure development projects under TNDP in the villages of Tsabong, Ghanzi, Letlhakeng, Palapye, Ramotswa, Tlokweng, Moshupa, Bobonong, Mmadinare, Mahalapye and Kasane.

Mr Brooks also asked the minister for a detailed scope and budget of the projects, the current status of infrastructural development in the said villages, DM assigned projects in the said villages as well as how local contractors would be involved in the projects. ends
