Over 20 schools in Gaborone have reception classes

29 Nov 2023

Five schools namely: Tlhabologo, Boswa, Mophane, Diphetogo and Khuduga primary schools in the Gaborone Bonnington South constituency have a total enrolment of 186 pupils at reception level, whilst Bophirima is yet to have a reception class mainly due to shortage of class rooms.

Answering question in Parliament, the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Mabuse Pule explained that according to the guidelines on reception classes, each school was supposed to have two classrooms designated for reception enrolment.

He said there was acute shortage of classrooms at schools in Gaborone, hence the local authority resorted to converting some old storerooms and libraries into classrooms to cater for reception classes.

Nonetheless, he said his ministry through the backlog eradication programme was continuously increasing classrooms at various primary schools to address classroom shortages.

He further highlighted that Gaborone had benefited from the construction of two new schools which would go a long way in alleviating shortage of classrooms.

Mr Pule said in Gaborone, 22 out of 29 schools have reception classes, adding that a total of 931 children have been enrolled in the twenty two schools with reception classes. Gaborone Bonnington South MP Mr Christian Greeff had asked the assistant minister to apprise the House on the status of reception classes in the concerned primary schools. ENDS
