Botswana tennis star, Phenyo Matong succumbed to a 6-7, 2-6 loss against, Frenchman Arthur Surreaux to bow out in the second round of the Dakar Tennis Open tournament on Wednesday, December 4.

The tournament, which is an ITF F2 Men’s Futures hard court event commenced in the Senegalese capital city on Tuesday with Matong entering the main draw as a wild-card. The result continued the 27-year-old’s frustration at failing to progress beyond the second round of any ITF Tennis Pro Circuit event since entering the field.

Matong ran the 8th seeded and world number 658 Frenchman close in the first set and forced a tie-break. But he was blown apart in the second set to exit the tournament.

He reached the second round after outclassing Karl Grossey of Great Britain 7-6, 6-2 in the opening match on Tuesday. The result at the Dakar Tennis Open tournament improved Matong’s record in ITF/ ATP singles events to 3 wins in 6 matches this year. He has had a fine year including defending his Botswana Open title in July and winning the Matola Open in Mozambique. ENDS
