Govt to expedite compensation process for Disana residents

14 Nov 2023

There has been progress in compensating residents of Disana ward following their query on the use of wrong guidelines for compensation in 2006.

The Disana residents and others were relocated to give way to the expansion of the Maun International Airport.

The Minister of Transport and Public Works, Mr Eric Molale therefore told Parliament in response to a question from Maun East legislator, Mr Goretetse Kekgonegile that to date, 1 229 residents have been fully paid their compensation, leaving a balance of 162.

He said officials from the ministry would be in Maun before the end of the year collecting relevant documents and information from the remaining 162 residents.

Mr Molale also said it had become evident that some residents were underpaid as some of their properties were left out of the original assessment.

“A team is on the ground re-assessing these properties and verifying documents to confirm the authenticity of the information,” he said.

In an effort to expedite closure of the matter, Mr Molale said arrangements have been made with the residents to register their complaints with the office of the District Commissioner in Maun.

He said so far two complaints that were received through the DC’s office have since been resolved.

He said the aim was to complete the compensation process before the end of the current financial year.

Mr Molale said a task team has been established to address complaints especially those of alleged overpayments.

MP Kekgonegile had asked the minister to update Parliament on compensation of the relocated Disana ward residents as well as measures put in place to receive complaints. Ends
