Gaborone Motor Club (GMC) has successfully closed an eventful year with a thrilling off-road challenge on Saturday.

The race, dubbed Mmopane 200 Off-road race, was organised to pay homage to the motorsport’s fallen legends who passed on or retired during the height of the illustrious career in the sport.

It was also meant to welcome back to the track, racing veterans who took part in the 200 kilometres challenge at the iconic Mmopane track near the Sir Seretse Khama Airport.

The route established by the GMC in the late 80s covered a variety of terrain from rocks, forests, stream crossing and everything nature could throw at the riders. In a closely contested senior bikes

OR 1 category, Victor Du Toit came first while Lepsy Mosope scooped the OR 4 coming first ahead of Moabi Nyanga.

In the OR 6 ladies class, Tadiwa Tafa came first and continued her impressive form.  In the OR 7 High school class, Euan Harmse came first ahead of Tabona Tafa.

In the quad bikes senior class, Lincoln Nielson scooped position one in the Q1 category while in the Q2 open class, Mbati Totego raced ahead of Roshan Noble.

In the cars category, Mohamed Moultson and Anverul Moultson came first in class A, Koziba Lebala and Wynie Odisang were crowned winners in class B, Ahmed Hussain and Victor Fincham were third overall.

In an interview, one of the race organisers, Jackie Meyer of GMC said he was happy about the overall event because everything turned out as planned.

“We had visits from a few legends that did not race but turned out to support our initiative.

Unfortunately some riders did not make it due to mechanical issues with the bikes but were there to support.

Everyone that raced enjoyed the route and want a Mmopane 200 once again.

It was the last event for our club,” Meyer said. ENDS
