Selebi Phikwe-based Baitshephi Ba Jeso (BBJ) gospel choir on October 21 donated 2 214 packets of sanitary pads to all schools in the small town.
The donation was to support the girl child with basic, but critical needs such that they ledd dignified lives and ensure that girls pursue their dreams with confidence.
Speaking on behalf of the Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry, Ms Beauty Manake, Pastor Godfrey Mbaiwa said it was high time everybody came on board to address the challenges and needs of the community, including those tied to education and empowerment.
Pastor Mbaiwa appreciated BBJ members for their unwavering commitment to the community, thanked them for the noble gesture, and emphasised that the sanitary pads were not merely essential items, but instruments of empowerment, dignity, and confidence for the young girls.
“This donation will enable the girls to attend their classes with dignity and without the fear of missing out on their classes due to a natural process,” he said.
Pastor Mbaiwa expressed deepest gratitude to all those who were involved in the act of kindness for their generosity that would resonate in the hearts and minds of the girls of Selebi Phikwe.
When receiving the donations on behalf of Selebi Phikwe schools, mayor of Selebi Phikwe town, Mr Lucas Modimana said BBJ initiative - Pink Project for a Girl Child - had come at the right time when most households and the government were overwhelmed with meeting the economic needs of the girl child.
He said sanitary pads were the basic needs that every girl child was entitled to have for them to exercise good hygiene.
Mr Modimana said lack of basic needs frustrated the girls efforts to meet their health needs, calling all stakeholders and individuals to give a helping hand where it was needed.
The chairperson of the BBJ Ms Keaobaka Sonke said the Pink project was meant to give back to the community and thank them for their unwavering support that had sustained the choir over a long period of time.
Ms Sonke said they identified the project as a critical area that needed to be addressed to ensure access to education for all irrespective of their socio-economic status.
On behalf of Baitshephi Ba Jeso, Ms Sonke also thanked all the stakeholders and individuals who contributed meaningfully to the success of the initiative. ENDS
