A Botswana developmental team has won the annual Lou Corbi Under-12 Primary Schools Rugby Festival in Zimbabwe over the weekend.
The tournament, which was held in Bulawayo, was a 15s competition which used normal rugby rules. Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) selected a team comprising 30 kids from the Re Ba Bona Ha development programme to represent the country.
BRU development officer, Frederick Kebadiretse said most of the players selected were from the Re Ba Bona Ha Centre in Selebi Phikwe, the Tlamelo Centre in Gaborone, and the Maun Puppies. The local boys, coached by Thusego ‘Tosca’ Segaise, won five matches and drew one to secure the championship. Ten teams competed at the festival.
“This marks a notable improvement and progression for the boys after they were named the most improved team at last year’s tournament,” said Kebadiretse.
The team was engaged in a training camp in Selebi Phikwe during November in preparation for the festival. Meanwhile, Botswana referee, Bucks Keopetswe was named best referee of the festival. Ends
