According to the International Telecommunication Union, the Fourth Generation (4G) standard or international Mobile Telecommunication-Advanced (ITM-Advanced) comprises Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-Advanced) and WirelessMAN-Advanced (WiMAX).
Responding to a Parliamentary question, Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Nonofo Molefhi said two Public Telecommunications Operators (PTOs), Orange Botswana and Mascom Wireless as well as Global Broadband Solutions and Micro Teck, had been awarded spectrum licences to roll out WiMAX networks in Botswana.
He further noted that the two PTOs conducted technical trials on LTE which were completed in March and September this year by Mascom and Orange respectively.
He said both PTOs had expressed interest in rolling out LTE services in the future, while BOCRA was currently consulting industry stakeholders to determine the appropriate spectrum for LTE services.
South East South MP, Mr Odirile Motlhale had asked the minister of Transport Communications how many public telephone operators in the country have rolled out the 4G network, if none, why was this the case. Ends
