SSKIA boasts Infrastructural capacity

04 Oct 2023

Botswana’s strategic geographical location within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) position is an ideal gateway for airlines seeking alternative routes and destinations.

The recent diversion of Kenya Airways Boeing 787 to Sir Seretse Khama International Airport due to adverse weather conditions highlights the country’s growing capacity to accommodate large aircraft.

In an interview, Public Affairs Manager at the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) Mr Modipe Nkwe, said it was becoming evident that Botswana was on track to realise its aviation ambitions.

Mr Nkwe said international flights frequently traversed Botswana’s airspace on their routes between northern Africa and South Africa.

The CAAB grants permissions and levies charges for this over flight, constituting a significant source of aeronautical revenue for the authority.

Furthermore, he said when foreign aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 are forced to divert to Botswana due to weather conditions or other factors, the nation’s airports prove their capability in terms of the infrastructure that is designed to handle larger aircraft, ensuring smooth landings and passenger safety.

In addition, landing fees, fueling services, and other charges contribute to Botswana’s revenue generation, benefiting the economy.

“We were able to take in a 787 because we have the capacity to be able to handle its capacity,” Mr Nkwe said.

The public affairs manager acknowledged that adverse weather conditions, like those that led to the diversion of the Kenyan Airways flight, could potentially impact local flights.

In such situations, pilots may opt for alternative landing locations, underscoring the importance of Botswana’s well-equipped airports as viable options.

Mr Nkwe emphasized that congestion at major airports, such as Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, could also lead to diversions.

He said Botswana’s capacity to handle larger aircraft, like the Boeing 787, had been demonstrated by its successful landing.

The Boeing 787, a flagship aircraft of Kenya Airways, is renowned for its impressive capabilities.

This modern marvel, also known as the Dreamliner, boasts a maximum seating capacity of approximately 242 passengers in a two-class configuration.

What sets it apart is its fuel efficiency, long-range capabilities, and advanced technology.

The Dreamliner can cover distances of up to 13 950 kilometers in a single flight, making it an ideal choice for long-haul journeys. Ends
