Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA) organised a national top 16 championship tournament at the SSG in Gaborone.

The tournament was made of singles, mixed doubles and doubles categories. There were four groups in each category, each with four players, making a total of 16 players for singles while mixed and doubles had 32 players each. Each group members had to play with each other and those who made it had proceeded to the quarter finals.

From each group, position one and two were taken to proceed to quarter finals. After the quarter finals they played knock off stage where the players were reduced to four players that went to play semi-finals and later finals.

In women singles Boitshwarelo Bizo Butale of Smash Maniacs Club got position one after beating Matshidiso Osi 4-3 from same club, while Tshepiso Rebatenne of BDF club came third after beating Namibo Mbulawa of Smash Maniacs 4-2.

In men singles, Thobo Matlhatsi of BDF got first position after beating Tshepo Modisane of Smash Maniacs 4-3 while Kennete Santudu came third after beating Joseph Kgatlampane 4-0.

Mixed doubles Tshepiso Rebatenne and Kennete Santudu got position one after beating Masa Lesole and Matshidiso Osi of Smash Maniacs 3-1 while women doubles Namibo Mbulawa and Tshepiso Rebatenne got championship after beating Dr Lovie Chilisa and Boitshwarelo Butale of Smash Maniacs 3-2.

The men’s doubles championship went to Tiro Motswasele and Thobo Matlhatsi of BDF by beating Keromemang Chise and Olaotse Selema from 3-0. BTTA Assistant Publicity Secretary, Tiroyaone Motswasele, said the championships tournament went well and was sponsored by Master Joinery & Aluminium with P7 000.

Prizes was divided as follows: all singles, position one, two and three won P 1 000; P 600 and P 400 respectively mixed doubles, women’s and men’s doubles position one and two pocketed P 500 and P400 respectively.

He said that the tournament went well and the sponsor was happy with performance of the players. Meanwhile Zone 6 Championship that was supposed to be staged in Lusaka, Zambia this month have been postponed to January 2014 because of some pending logistics. Ends
