Budget constraints delay uptake of SHHA scheme

The total number of Self Help Housing Agency (SHHA) scheme projects across Nkange constituency are 517 consisting of 147 beneficiaries for turnkey and 370 for home improvement scheme since its inception in the district in 2010.

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Sethabelo Modukanele said all the home improvement projects were complete whereas 12 turnkey projects were still ongoing.

He said the uptake of the scheme was delayed on account of budget constraints and default in repayments by beneficiaries thus funds not accumulating as anticipated into the revolving fund.

Mr Modukanele said out of the over P6 million that had been disbursed to fund the 517 projects, only about P600 000 had been repaid as at March 31, 2023.

He noted that 13 beneficiaries were funded for turnkey in Maitengwe, two in Changate two, nine in Senete nine, 11 in Nkange, 97 in Tutume 97, five in Goshwe, one in Matobo and nine in Nswazwi.

As for home improvement, he said 33 were funded in Maitengwe, two in Dagwi, one in Changate, six in Nkange, 316 in Tutume, three in Matobe, two in Makuta and seven in Nswazwi.

The MP for Nkange, Dr Never Tshabang had asked the minister to state the number of SHHA projects per village in the constituency, and what delayed the uptake of the scheme. ENDS
