Post offices to diversify services

25 Jun 2023

Batswana have been urged to take advantage of services offered by BotswanaPost other than sending letters and parcels.

Opening a new post office in Dukwi recently, Minister of Communication, Knowledge and Technology Mr Thulagano Segokgo said BotswanaPost offered many services in support of the government initiative of taking services closer to the people.

He said the post office having services offered by different departments was a deliberate move to reduce distances and costs that Batswana incurred as they travelled to service centres.

In the case of Dukwi, he noted, people had to either go to Tutume, Nata or Francistown to access services which would now be easier to receive following the opening of a post office in their village.

He further noted that they were looking to diversify services offered by post offices besides vehicle licensing and old age pensioners’ to include paying for expired identity cards, registration of weddings and getting medical prescriptions.

The minister, therefore, said they would embark on an exercise to sensitise Batswana on services offered by post offices across the country. He further noted that through partnerships which involved BotswanaPost and other stakeholders, villages in remote areas were able to enjoy services.

Meanwhile, BotswanaPost Chief Executive Officer Mr Cornelius Ramatlhakwane said although they had a social mandate, they were also a commercial entity which competed with the private sector for business.

Nata/Gweta MP, Mr Polson Majaga commended BotswanaPost for fulfilling their promise of  building a post office in Dukwi.  ENDS
