BDF Cats are My Spar My Botswana Netball League champions.

Cats emerged victorious after hammering BDF TASC, 39-37 during the finals of the league that were held at BONA courts on November 23. The army teams started the final on a high note with both showing more determination to become the champions.

Even though Cats had dominance on TASC, the latter came back at the last quarte, and also put Cats under a tremendous pressure to end the game with a difference of a two score margin. However, throughout the first three quarters, Cats led by 11-7, 22-14 and 29-23, respectively.

UB Crystals got position three after beating Notwane 49-45 in the semi-final. The top four teams all walked away with a price money of P20 000, P18 000, P15 000 and P12 000, as well as medals and miniature trophies.

Three Cats players; Gagotheko Tshelametsi, Lebogang Ntebogang and Hilda Binang were awarded miniature trophies and P500 Spar Supermarket shopping vouchers each for being the; best midcourt player, best defender and best shooter namely and best overall player, respectively.

Notwane player, Kamogelo Lekoko, also emerged the best overall player of the league and walked away with a miniature trophy and a P500 Spar Supermarket shopping voucher. Giving a brief summary of the league, BONA marketing and publicity officer, Kelebogile Maplanka, said the league that was mainly sponsored by Spar Supermarket, went well this year.

“We are quite happy especially looking at the fact that when the league started we gave the teams grants, which was an agreement between us and the sponsor, so as to have all the teams starting on the same ground,” she added.

About 20 netball teams, from both the southern and the northern region, participated in the league, which was an improvement by six teams as compared to the 2012 league.

Some of the teams from the northern zone were; TASC, BOASA, Miscellaneous, Botsrail, Flamingoes, Morupule Wanderers and Arsenal, while those from the Southern Zone were; Cats, Flying Doves, Prisons, UB Crystals, Jwaneng, PUBS, Notwane, Jungle Queens, Flying Hawks and Mochudi Centre Chiefs. Ends
